Sustainable Urban Mobility Intern
Organizational Context
The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) promotes sustainable urban development globally. As the UN's focal point for urbanization, it works with partners to build inclusive, safe, resilient cities and communities. The Urban Basic Services Section, specifically the Urban Mobility team, addresses challenges posed by rapid urbanization, focusing on sustainable, accessible, and efficient mobility solutions to improve quality of life and achieve Sustainable Development Goals.
Job Purpose
This internship within UN-Habitat's Urban Mobility team offers a chance to contribute to impactful projects focused on sustainable urban mobility. The role involves assisting in the implementation of initiatives related to public transport, active mobility, road safety, and electric mobility. It also includes documenting project successes, contributing to policy analysis, conducting data and spatial analysis using GIS, researching emerging mobility trends, and supporting capacity-building and advocacy activities. The intern will play a key role in promoting sustainable urban development and achieving global goals by supporting diverse projects and stakeholder engagement.
Responsibilities
Assist in implementing sustainable urban mobility initiatives, including piloting innovative solutions in public transport, active mobility, road safety, and electric mobility. Document project successes and lessons learned to inform future efforts. Contribute to policy analysis by reviewing national and local mobility strategies and identifying alignment opportunities. Conduct data collection and spatial analysis using GIS tools to support planning. Research emerging trends in innovative, smart, and climate-resilient transport. Compile best practices and produce reports and presentations for capacity-building. Draft and refine project proposals. Support monitoring of mobility commitments within global frameworks like SDGs. Develop communication materials such as factsheets and infographics. Organize advocacy initiatives like placemaking events and car-free days. Coordinate meetings and consultations with stakeholders, including governments and NGOs.
Work Experience
Professional work experience is not required for this internship. However, experience with Geographic Information System (GIS) and related work is mandatory. Experience in quality assurance, knowledge management, and disseminating lessons learned from urban mobility or energy projects is desirable.
Skills
GIS and spatial analysis, Microsoft Office Suite proficiency, research and data collection, report writing, communication and presentation skills, stakeholder engagement, interest in sustainable urban mobility, ability to work with diverse cultural backgrounds.
