Junior Climate Change Specialist - Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC)
Organizational Context
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) seeks a Junior Climate Change Specialist to support the Climate Technology Centre and Network (CTCN) Programme of Work. This role focuses on delivering technical assistance and strengthening partnerships within the Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) region, specifically engaging with National Designated Entities (NDEs).
Job Purpose
The Junior Climate Change Specialist will play a crucial role in advancing UNEP's climate change initiatives within the LAC region. The primary purpose is to ensure the successful delivery of the CTCN's technical assistance programs, contributing to climate change mitigation and adaptation efforts. This involves managing and refining technical assistance requests, coordinating response plans, and monitoring implementation. The role also aims to strengthen partnerships with National Designated Entities (NDEs) and contribute to capacity building, knowledge management, and communication activities, ultimately supporting the uptake of climate technologies and addressing regional climate technology gaps.
Responsibilities
Key responsibilities include supporting the development and delivery of technical assistance in the LAC region, managing adaptation technical assistance requests from generation to refinement, and overseeing day-to-day management. The specialist will review country requests, provide recommendations on eligibility and prioritization, and design, coordinate, and implement technical assistance response plans. Monitoring implementer performance against timelines and deliverables, and reviewing the quality of project outputs are also critical. Furthermore, the role involves supporting the evaluation of technical proposals, contributing to capacity building, knowledge management, and communication efforts related to climate technologies, and developing materials for regional events. Providing regional intelligence on climate technology gaps and supporting pipeline monitoring are also key duties.
Work Experience
Requires at least three years of professional experience in environment, natural resources management, or international development. Additionally, a minimum of two years of experience specifically in climate change issues and understanding economic development levels across Latin America and the Caribbean is necessary. Experience preparing briefing notes, planning documents, or other project coordination tools is also required.
Skills
Excellent written and verbal communication skills in Spanish and English. Ability to synthesize information clearly and structure it effectively. Strong planning, prioritization, and task delivery capabilities. Experience working harmoniously in multicultural teams. Knowledge of climate change mitigation and adaptation in LAC is an asset. Experience with UN or international organizations is an asset.
