Organizational Context
This internship is with the UN Secretariat, under the Resident Coordinator System in San Jose, Costa Rica. The intern will support the Greening the Blue Committee at UN House Costa Rica, contributing to environmental sustainability initiatives. This role is crucial for advancing the UN's commitment to environmental stewardship within its operations.
Job Purpose
The primary purpose of this internship is to provide essential support to the Greening the Blue Committee at UN House Costa Rica. The intern will play a key role in advancing environmental sustainability initiatives by conducting a preliminary institutional environmental diagnostic and contributing to the design of a comprehensive sustainability improvement strategy. This strategy will be aligned with the Greening the Blue principles and the broader commitments of the United Nations System, aiming to reduce the environmental footprint of UN operations. The intern's contribution will directly support the UN House Costa Rica in enhancing its environmental performance, fostering a more sustainable operational environment, and ensuring adherence to global environmental standards. This role is vital for translating environmental commitments into tangible actions within the local UN context, contributing to the overall mission of sustainable development.
Responsibilities
Under the direct supervision of the Executive Assistant, the intern will be instrumental in supporting the various initiatives undertaken by the Greening the Blue Committee. A core responsibility involves assisting in the thorough elaboration of a preliminary institutional environmental diagnostic for UN House Costa Rica, identifying key areas for improvement. Furthermore, the intern will contribute significantly to the design and development of a comprehensive strategy aimed at enhancing the environmental sustainability of UN House Costa Rica, ensuring full alignment with the established Greening the Blue principles and the overarching environmental commitments of the United Nations System. This role necessitates working in close coordination with the Greening the Blue Committee, actively participating in meetings, and presenting regular updates, proposals, and recommendations to the Committee for their valuable feedback and guidance. The intern will also be responsible for supporting the meticulous preparation of a final written document that consolidates the diagnostic findings, the proposed strategy, and actionable recommendations. As required, the intern will provide crucial support in preparing presentations or executive inputs to facilitate informed decision-making processes. Finally, the intern may be assigned other technical functions, particularly those related to economic analysis and data management, which fall within the strategic priorities of the Office.
Work Experience
Professional work experience is not mandatory for this internship. However, applicants should possess a field of study closely related to environmental sustainability. Desirable experience includes prior work in environmental health topics.
Skills
Technical analysis (economic, data management); Fluent in Spanish (oral and written); Proficiency in another official UN language (desirable).
