Organizational Context
The Department of Safety and Security (UNDSS) provides global leadership, operational support, and oversight for the UN security management system. It enables the safe and effective delivery of UN programs in challenging environments. This Field Security Associate role is based in Santiago, Chile, assisting the Security Adviser in implementing security operations and managing safety for UN personnel within the Area of Responsibility.
Job Purpose
The Field Security Associate supports the Security Adviser in Santiago, Chile, by assisting in the implementation of security operations and managing safety for UN personnel. This involves collecting and communicating security information, liaising with host government and local authorities, assessing security situations, and verifying security intelligence. The role contributes to the safe and effective delivery of UN programs by ensuring security measures are in place and staff are informed and prepared. The position offers valuable experience in security risk management within a dynamic international organization, contributing to peace, human rights, and Sustainable Development Goals.
Responsibilities
The Field Security Associate assists the Security Adviser by collecting and disseminating security information within the Area of Responsibility (AoR). This includes liaising with host government security, local authorities, military, police, and NGOs. The role involves assessing the security situation, gathering and verifying intelligence, and communicating security issues to UN agencies. Responsibilities also include maintaining the UN Security Plan, monitoring security measure implementation, and reporting security incidents. Additionally, the Associate supports security awareness training, conducts security evaluations for UN staff residences, manages the warden system, administers a pass and ID system, and liaises with commercial security providers. General administrative support, maintaining contact databases, and taking meeting minutes are also part of the duties.
Work Experience
Seven years of work experience in security, risk management, disaster, or emergency areas is required. This experience can be in public or private service, including national security, military, police, or corporate environments. The minimum experience is reduced to five years for candidates with a first-level university degree. Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint) is mandatory. Prior experience with the UN system or international NGOs, and with radio communication systems, is desirable.
