Organizational Context
The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) Regional Office for West and Central Africa in Dakar, Senegal, hosts this six-month, full-time, unpaid internship. The intern will work under the supervision of professional staff, contributing to the Global Firearms Programme's activities and supporting UNODC's broader mandate.
Job Purpose
This internship aims to provide practical experience within the UNODC's Global Firearms Programme. The intern will support various programme activities, including normative work, intergovernmental engagement, technical assistance, and tool development. Key contributions involve assisting in the organization of workshops, meetings, and high-level events, conducting research on firearms-related issues, and preparing relevant documentation. The role also involves monitoring media, drafting communications, and taking meeting notes, all under professional supervision, to further the programme's objectives and UNODC's mission in West and Central Africa.
Responsibilities
Support the Global Firearms Programme's normative, intergovernmental, and technical assistance activities. Assist in organizing and executing technical assistance workshops, meetings, high-level events, and conferences, including follow-up actions. Conduct comprehensive research on legal documents, official sources, and open-source information related to firearms issues. Prepare technical documents, background papers, country profiles, news summaries, presentations, reports, talking points, and speeches. Perform legal research and analysis of relevant legislation. Contribute to the work of the GFP Community of Practitioners against Firearms Trafficking. Monitor firearms-related incidents and events through media reviews, disseminate weekly briefs, and support related follow-up actions. Draft correspondence and communications, attend meetings, and take accurate minutes. Undertake other necessary tasks to support the programme's objectives.
Work Experience
Professional work experience is not required for this UN Internship Programme. However, applicants must possess good knowledge of standard software applications, particularly MS Word, MS PowerPoint, and MS Teams. The ability to draft news articles and/or social media posts is desirable, as is the ability to design surveys and polls.
Skills
Computer literacy in standard software applications (MS Word, MS PowerPoint, MS Teams). Keen interest in the work of the United Nations and commitment to its ideals. Ability to interact successfully with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds. Willingness to be tolerant of differing opinions. Ability to draft news articles/social media posts (desirable). Ability to design surveys and polls (desirable). Fluency in English and French.
