Organizational Context
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority, setting the environmental agenda and promoting sustainable development. The Industry and Economy Division encourages sustainable consumption and production, efficient resource use, and sound chemical management. The Sustainable Mobility Unit focuses on low- and zero-emission transport in developing countries.
Job Purpose
This consultancy role supports UNEP's Sustainable Mobility Unit in advancing green freight and sustainable transport initiatives. The consultant will contribute to developing strategies and action plans for electric mobility, particularly in African cities and regions like SADC. Key contributions include facilitating knowledge exchange, providing technical assistance, developing electrification roadmaps, and creating funding proposals to scale up UNEP's Green Freight Programme, ultimately aiming to improve air quality and mitigate climate change through sustainable transport solutions.
Responsibilities
Develop a report on at least three South-South knowledge exchanges related to green freight corridors. Provide technical assistance for the Abidjan-Lagos Corridor's Green Freight Strategy and Action Plan. Create a strategy for UNEP to support e-BRT and e-bus projects in African cities. Produce a stakeholder engagement report for an HDV electrification roadmap in the SADC region. Develop a scale-up concept and funding proposal for the UNEP Green Freight Programme. This involves organizing meetings, collecting and analyzing data, writing technical reports, and developing technical tools.
Work Experience
A minimum of three years of work experience in transport projects within African countries is required. Experience in transport issues in Africa, including strong research on African transport systems, is necessary. Experience in data collection and research is also required.
