Organizational Context
This internship is within the International Trade Law Division (ITLD) of the Office of Legal Affairs (OLA) at the United Nations in Vienna. ITLD serves as the secretariat for UNCITRAL, the core UN body for international trade law, tasked with harmonizing and unifying trade law globally. The division focuses on developing legislative texts and providing technical assistance.
Job Purpose
The purpose of this internship is to provide practical training and experience in international trade law while supporting the International Trade Law Division (ITLD) in fulfilling the mandate of UNCITRAL. Interns will assist officers with research, drafting legal texts, and providing technical assistance related to international trade law. This role contributes to the UN's objective of harmonizing and unifying international trade law by supporting the work of UNCITRAL, the principal legal body in this field. The internship offers exposure to legislative development, case law analysis, and coordination within the UN system concerning commercial law.
Responsibilities
Assist officers in the International Trade Law Division (ITLD) with research and preparation of comparative legal studies. Support the drafting of legal texts, such as draft conventions and model laws, including conducting background research. Undertake ad hoc legal and administrative assignments as requested. Contribute to identifying legislative reform needs and assistance requirements in various countries and sectors. Assist in collecting and analyzing case law related to UNCITRAL texts. Support the development and maintenance of the UNCITRAL website. Aid in coordination functions within the Division and with the UNCITRAL Law Library. The internship is full-time, unpaid, and supervised by professional staff.
Work Experience
Professional work experience is not required for this internship. However, a field of study closely related to international trade law is necessary. The ability to manage time effectively, prioritize tasks, and work under pressure is desirable.
Skills
Computer literacy in standard software (word processing, spreadsheets, research). Knowledge of library functions (bibliographies, archiving). Demonstrated interest in UN work and commitment to UN Charter ideals. Ability to interact effectively with diverse cultural backgrounds. Excellent command of English or French (oral and written proficiency).
