Organizational Context
The United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) is a key international agreement addressing desertification, land degradation, and drought. This role supports the UNCCD Secretariat's New York Liaison Office in preparing for and conducting COP17 and related UNGA engagements, requiring diplomatic outreach and coordination with Member States and UN entities.
Job Purpose
This consultancy aims to provide senior-level multilateral diplomacy expertise to support the UNCCD Secretariat's high-level political engagement and coordination efforts. The role is crucial for the successful preparation and conduct of COP17 and related UN General Assembly sessions. The expert will facilitate outreach, coordinate political inputs, manage negotiations, and strengthen engagement with Member States, UN entities, and other stakeholders to ensure effective coordination, political outreach, and successful negotiation outcomes for UNCCD priorities.
Responsibilities
The consultant will liaise with the host country, regional groups, Member States, and national delegations for COP17 and UNGA. Key duties include coordinating and facilitating political consultations and negotiations, supporting the preparation and management of in-session political outputs, and conducting high-level outreach to mobilize political support for UNCCD priorities. The role involves liaising with UN entities and stakeholders to foster support for UNCCD initiatives, providing strategic advice on diplomacy and engagement, and assisting in drafting and reviewing political documents. Additionally, the consultant will facilitate coordination between the UNCCD secretariat and partners, provide analytical updates on political developments, and participate in relevant meetings and consultations.
Work Experience
A minimum of twenty-five (25) years of professional experience in multilateral diplomacy, political affairs, or international negotiations is required. Proven experience in coordinating high-level multilateral processes and negotiations within the UN system or similar international settings is essential. Experience working with Permanent Missions, regional groups, and senior UN officials is also necessary.
