Organizational Context
The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), through its Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice Section, assists Member States in preventing crime and strengthening criminal justice systems. The section upholds UN standards and norms, focusing on areas like access to justice, violence prevention, and judicial reform, aligning with UNODC's Strategy 2021-2025.
Job Purpose
This internship within the Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice Section (CPCJS) of UNODC offers a valuable opportunity to contribute to the Global Programme on People-centred Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice Reform. The intern will support the section's mandate by conducting research, assisting in the preparation of publications and reports, and facilitating technical assistance missions and events. This role provides practical experience in international crime prevention efforts and the development of criminal justice systems, under the guidance of experienced officers, contributing to UNODC's mission to promote justice and the rule of law globally.
Responsibilities
The intern will conduct research on the political and legal aspects of crime prevention and criminal justice reform. Key duties include contributing to the preparation of UNODC publications, background notes, reports, briefing materials, and presentations. The intern will also assist in drafting correspondence with Member State governments, preparing talking points, and speeches. Furthermore, the role involves supporting staff in the preparation of technical assistance missions, workshops, meetings, high-level events, and conferences, including providing assistance to field offices. Attending and taking notes at various meetings and performing other necessary tasks are also part of the responsibilities.
Work Experience
Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study closely related to crime prevention and criminal justice is required. Proficiency in standard software applications like MS Word, PowerPoint, and Excel is necessary. Knowledge of design tools such as Canva or Adobe is desirable.
Skills
Computer literacy in standard software applications (MS Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Teams). Demonstrated keen interest in the work of the UN and commitment to its Charter. Ability to interact successfully with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds. Research and analytical skills. Communication and writing skills. Organizational skills.
