Organizational Context
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the UN's designated entity for global and regional environmental issues. It coordinates environmental policy consensus by monitoring the global environment and highlighting emerging issues for international action. The Environment Management Group (EMG) within UNEP enhances cooperation on environment and human settlements.
Job Purpose
This role is crucial for enhancing coordination and impact within the UN system on environmental issues. The incumbent will lead efforts to identify areas for greater efficiency, develop policy documents, and conduct surveys to inform discussions within the EMG. Responsibilities include analyzing data from UN sister agencies, establishing partnerships, coordinating policy development, and supervising the preparation of reports and presentations. The role also involves managing outreach activities, ensuring gender mainstreaming, and leading data analysis for planning and decision-making to support UNEP's mandate in environmental coordination.
Responsibilities
Lead initiatives to identify opportunities for increased efficiency and impact through UN system coordination. Develop and report on issues benefiting from enhanced coordination, proposing corrective actions and liaising with relevant parties. Conduct surveys, design data collection instruments, and analyze responses to identify problems and prepare conclusions. Present information on best practices for coordination and coherence in UN environmental work. Review assessments from UN sister agencies to facilitate discussions on coordinated actions. Establish and maintain collaborations and partnerships with key officials. Coordinate policy development where UN system consensus exists on environmental matters. Supervise the preparation of various written outputs, including background papers, analyses, and reports. Direct substantive support for meetings and conferences, including agenda setting and document preparation. Manage outreach activities to promote UNEP's coordination efforts. Ensure gender mainstreaming in all coordination activities. Lead data collection and analysis efforts for planning and reporting, ensuring data accessibility and sharing.
Work Experience
A minimum of ten years of progressively responsible experience in environment or development policy and programmes is required. Experience within the UN system or a comparable international organization is also required. Desirable experience includes data analytics and environmental governance.
