Organizational Context
The Division of Healthcare Management and Occupational Safety and Health (DHMOSH) within the UN Secretariat's Department of Operational Support provides expert healthcare and occupational safety services to UN entities globally. It offers strategic leadership on medical issues through the UN Medical Directors Network. This Medical Officer role reports to the Medical Director of DHMOSH.
Job Purpose
The Medical Officer will provide essential clinical and medico-administrative services to UN staff. Key responsibilities include managing day-to-day clinical duties, conducting occupational health examinations, providing travel health advice and immunizations, and delivering health education. Administratively, the role involves supervising medical evacuations, liaising with medical facilities, ensuring adherence to UN medical policies, and contributing to crisis preparedness plans. The officer will also play a crucial role in managing health insurance claims, collaborating with HR partners, and developing health policies across various UN entities.
Responsibilities
The Medical Officer will perform daily clinical duties, including managing walk-in clinics and emergencies. Occupational health responsibilities include conducting pre-placement and periodic medical examinations, preparing staff for travel with immunizations and health kits, and providing health education. Medico-administrative duties encompass supervising medical evacuations, reporting, liaising with UN medical units and host-nation facilities, and ensuring compliance with UN medical clearance, sick leave, and evacuation policies. The role also involves contributing to business continuity and crisis preparedness plans, deputizing for other medical officers, processing sick leave and child benefits, and collaborating on policy development. Additionally, the officer will serve as a Focal Point for the Health and Life Insurance Section, reviewing claims, policy coverage, and contracts, and harmonizing benefit management with other UN agencies.
Work Experience
A minimum of five years of progressive clinical experience in a medical field is required. Experience with electronic medical record systems and managing health insurance claims is also necessary.
