GIS and Artificial Intelligence Intern

I-1
Organizational Context
The UN Secretariat, specifically UNRWA's Department of Security and Risk Management (DSRM) in Amman, is undergoing digital transformation. This involves enhancing geospatial capabilities and responsibly integrating artificial intelligence into security information management and operations. This internship role supports these initiatives by contributing to GIS products and AI-assisted tools across DSRM's field offices.
Job Purpose
This internship aims to support the digital transformation within UNRWA's Department of Security and Risk Management (DSRM) by contributing to the development and support of Geographic Information System (GIS) products and Artificial Intelligence (AI)-assisted tools. The intern will gain practical experience in developing GIS products, spatial datasets, and map-based analysis within a UN operational context. They will also apply AI and automation tools to real security data and geospatial workflows, working within a humanitarian data management environment. The role is supervised by the Security Information Analyst and is expected to last for six months, with the possibility of remote work, though in-person at HQ Amman is preferred.
Responsibilities
The intern will support the development and maintenance of GIS products for DSRM, including spatial datasets, geodatabases, and operational mapping outputs for five field offices. They will assist in integrating AI features, such as natural language processing and automated classification, into existing and new DSRM tools and geospatial products. The role involves contributing to the design and development of low-code applications (e.g., Power Apps, Dataverse) to support GIS and data management needs. Additionally, the intern will contribute to documentation of system logic and user guidance, support tool testing and iteration with field user input, and assist with data visualization and reporting tasks in Power BI as needed.
Work Experience
Demonstrated experience with GIS software and spatial data management is a particular advantage. Familiarity with applied AI tools, large language models, or the Microsoft Power Platform (Power Apps, Power Automate, Power BI, Copilot Studio) and Dataverse is desirable but not required. The internship focuses on developing practical experience in GIS product development, AI integration, and low-code application development.
Skills
GIS software and spatial data management (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS), AI tools and large language models, Microsoft Power Platform (Power Apps, Power Automate, Power BI, Copilot Studio), Dataverse, low-code application development, data visualization, documentation, testing and iteration.
