The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) Regional Office for Southern Africa (ROSAF) is implementing a global project focused on drug demand reduction. This role supports the South African Government in developing national action plans for drug use prevention and substance use disorder treatment, aiming to improve interdepartmental collaboration.
Job Purpose
This role provides advanced technical support to the South African Government on drug demand reduction, aligning national efforts with international standards for drug use prevention and treatment. The purpose is to promote balanced drug control policies, foster evidence-based drug demand reduction and harm reduction strategies, and strengthen interdepartmental collaboration. The incumbent will manage project activities, including capacity-building workshops, to ensure the development and implementation of national action plans and treatment systems, contributing to improved public health outcomes and adherence to international frameworks.
Responsibilities
Provide advanced technical support to the South African Government on drug demand reduction, promoting balanced drug control policies aligned with international norms and standards. Support the alignment of national drug demand efforts with UNODC/WHO International Standards on Drug Use Prevention and Treatment. Manage day-to-day project activities in South Africa in coordination with UNODC ROSAF and the Health and Development Section. Lead capacity-building workshops for the South African Government and national stakeholders on developing drug use prevention and substance use disorder treatment systems. Strengthen interdepartmental collaboration on drug demand reduction and harm reduction through national capacity-building support.
Work Experience
A minimum of 10 years of professional experience at the national level in managing and working on drug use disorder treatment and care is required. Experience in programme/project management is also required. Previous experience in UN projects or donor-funded environments is desirable.
