Organizational Context
The United Nations Department of Safety and Security (UNDSS) provides global leadership, operational support, and oversight for the UN Security Management System. It enables the safe and effective delivery of UN programmes in challenging environments by managing security risks. This role, based in Islamabad, Pakistan, serves as the primary UNDSS focal point for Saving Lives Together (SLT) engagement, reporting to the Chief Security Adviser.
Job Purpose
The Field Security Coordination Officer (FSCO) is responsible for providing substantive inputs on the evolving security environment and UN security responses, utilizing analytical techniques and research to inform security programs and assess implications for Saving Lives Together (SLT) partners. The role supports the development of risk management strategies, planning, and the implementation of security risk management documents. The FSCO advises on integrating security into all UN activities, supports security-related projects, and enhances communication and trust with various stakeholders. This position aims to enable UN operations through trusted security leadership and solutions, contributing to peace, security, human rights, and the SDGs.
Responsibilities
The Field Security Coordination Officer (FSCO) forecasts security environments and UN responses, supports risk management strategies, and develops security planning documents. The role involves advising on security integration into UN activities, managing security projects, and monitoring preparedness and compliance among SLT partners. The FSCO enhances communication and trust through collaboration with diverse stakeholders, including NGOs, diplomatic missions, and host governments, to facilitate coordination and information sharing. Additionally, the position strengthens personnel awareness and preparedness through training and advice, conducts security surveys and assessments, and supports organizational resilience, contingency planning, and crisis decision-making. The FSCO also assists in establishing security communication systems, supports budget and logistical planning, and implements gender, diversity, and inclusion approaches in security risk management.
Work Experience
A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in security, risk management, or emergency preparedness is required. Desirable experience includes planning and implementing risk mitigation measures, field operations, international work, security program analysis, and coordinating security collaboration with non-governmental or international organizations.
