Information Management/Library Intern
Organizational Context
The Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) is an intergovernmental platform promoting sustainable development in the Asia-Pacific region, supporting national objectives and global frameworks. This internship is located within the Communications and Knowledge Management Section (CKMS), Office of the Deputy Executive Secretary for Programme Support (ODESPS), working under the direct supervision of library support staff and the overall supervision of the Chief Librarian.
Job Purpose
The purpose of this Information Management/Library Internship is to significantly contribute to the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP)'s mandate of fostering inclusive, resilient, and sustainable development across the Asia-Pacific region. The intern will play a crucial role within the Communications and Knowledge Management Section (CKMS), specifically supporting the Library team. This position is designed to enhance the effectiveness of library, information, and knowledge management initiatives. The intern's primary contribution will be to elevate the visibility and accessibility of valuable library resources for ESCAP staff and clients, while also promoting ESCAP's impactful work to key stakeholders and the wider public. By assisting with various tasks, the intern will directly support efficient information dissemination, knowledge sharing, and digital asset management, thereby strengthening ESCAP's operational capacity and outreach efforts in line with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. This full-time internship, lasting 3 to 6 months, offers practical experience in a dynamic international environment.
Responsibilities
The intern will be responsible for a diverse set of duties aimed at enhancing the efficiency and visibility of the Library and the Communications and Knowledge Management Section (CKMS). Core responsibilities include actively assisting in the library’s digitization efforts, contributing to the preservation and accessibility of valuable resources. The role involves significant participation in information management, knowledge management, and digital asset management tasks and initiatives, ensuring organized and retrievable data. The intern will support collection management activities, such as shelving and weeding materials, to maintain an up-to-date and relevant collection. Providing assistance in reference and circulation services will be crucial for supporting staff and clients. A key duty is cataloguing various materials, including books, serials, and multimedia, within the library’s integrated library system (ILS) and institutional repository, ensuring accurate record-keeping. Additionally, the intern will design and publish publicity and training materials for the library’s e-resources, services, and ESCAP publications, utilizing formats like online brochures, streaming video presentations, and curated email updates to maximize outreach and user engagement. Other related tasks will be performed as required to support the team.
Work Experience
Professional work experience is not required for applicants to the UN Internship Programme. However, a field of study closely related to information management or library science is necessary.
Skills
Proficiency in standard software applications, including MS Word, MS PowerPoint, and MS Teams. Fluency in English (oral and written) is required. Knowledge of French is desirable. Knowledge of Russian is an asset.
