This role sits within the Chemicals and Health Branch, specifically supporting the Chemicals Science and Policy Unit.
Job Purpose
This role supports the execution of the Global Chemicals Monitoring Programme and the development/update of National Implementation Plans (NIPs) under the Stockholm Convention. The purpose is to enhance stakeholder engagement, scientific coordination, and monitoring systems to generate high-quality data for global chemicals and waste management objectives. The consultant will ensure coherent, efficient, and timely delivery of project activities, resulting in technically sound NIPs that align with Convention obligations and improve POPs management at the national level. This contributes to informed policymaking on sound chemicals and waste management.
Responsibilities
Coordinate and communicate with key stakeholders for the Global Chemicals Monitoring Programme (GCMP), including preparing documents and leading sessions. Support the scientific advisory committee and organize interlaboratory assessments for POPs and mercury analysis. Facilitate global coordination on sampling and harmonized data generation, providing technical support for strategies on stakeholder engagement, knowledge management, and communication plans. Establish and implement a Community of Practice for knowledge sharing. Develop programme indicators and coordinate monitoring frameworks. Support coordination with the BRS and Minamata Convention secretariats. Review synergies between UNEP projects 10785 and 11945, and support drafting policy briefs and technical guidance documents. Facilitate technical reviews, incorporate feedback, and disseminate knowledge products. Coordinate events, including designing concepts and documenting outcomes. Review and update toolkit modules, collect user feedback, and support testing. Collect and review draft NIP updates from countries, providing feedback and ensuring progress. Consolidate technical progress and financial data, and prepare quarterly reports.
Work Experience
Requires at least five years of progressive experience in international chemicals and waste management, with a focus on persistent organic pollutants (POPs) and mercury. Demonstrated expertise in environmental monitoring, toxic chemicals, and environmental health is necessary. A strong understanding of international regulations for POPs and mercury, including the Stockholm and Minamata conventions, is required. Project management experience, particularly with diverse partners and developing countries, is essential. Experience with data management and interpretation is desired, and experience within the UN system is an asset.
