Organizational Context
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority. Its Industry and Economy Division encourages sustainable practices and policies. This role is within the Finance Policy Unit of the Finance and Economics Branch in Geneva, reporting to the Chief of the Finance and Economics Branch.
Job Purpose
This role leads UNEP's work on private finance policy and regulation, aiming to direct private capital towards sustainable development and a stable financial system. It involves formulating outreach strategies, providing analytical and technical assistance to countries on sustainable finance frameworks, and supporting their operationalization. The position also spearheads efforts to align financial policies with environmental goals, manages programmatic tasks, advises senior management on work programs, and oversees data management for informed decision-making. The objective is to foster environmentally sound decision-making and build corresponding activities through effective policy and financial tools.
Responsibilities
Lead UNEP's initiatives on private finance policy and regulation, engaging with financial institutions, policymakers, and multilateral platforms to steer private finance towards sustainable sectors and a stable financial system. Develop and implement outreach strategies, provide analytical and technical assistance on sustainable finance frameworks (e.g., taxonomies, disclosure), and support their regional and country-level operationalization. Coordinate with private finance initiatives and internal units for a cohesive approach to public and private financing of the transition. Lead analytical, outreach, and advocacy efforts on financial policies as enablers of environmental and financial system sustainability, aligning frameworks with UNEP's medium-term strategy. Oversee programmatic and administrative tasks, including budget management, performance reporting, staff supervision, and resource mobilization. Advise senior management on work programs, consult with international institutions, and coordinate reports for intergovernmental bodies. Collect and analyze data to provide insights for planning and decision-making.
Work Experience
A minimum of seven years of progressive professional experience in sustainable finance, environmental/resource economics, or finance/economic policy, with at least five years at the international level, is required. Experience coordinating multi-stakeholder groups in sustainable and private finance policy is essential. Experience with the private finance sector, including banks and institutional investors, and in developing work programs for diverse stakeholders is desirable. Two or more years of data analytics experience and a publication record are also desirable.
