Organizational Context
The United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI) is a UN entity established in 1968 to support global crime prevention and criminal justice. UNICRI assists organizations in developing and implementing policies in these fields. This role is based at UNICRI's Turin Headquarters and supports projects focused on strengthening prison systems and combating organized crime in Mexico and Guatemala.
Job Purpose
The Fellow will support the Programme Officer in executing project activities, conducting research, facilitating capacity-building initiatives, and engaging with stakeholders to enhance Mexico's prison system. This assignment is specifically tied to projects aimed at strengthening penitentiary systems and social crime prevention policies in Mexico, and improving Guatemala's prison system to counter organized crime and promote a human rights-based approach. The role contributes to fostering more secure, efficient, and rights-respecting penitentiary institutions, aligning with UNICRI's mission to promote just and effective criminal justice systems and uphold international standards. The Fellow will assist in data analysis, research, drafting of documents, and preparation for meetings and training activities.
Responsibilities
Support the collection, review, and analysis of data related to prison systems in Mexico, Guatemala, and the region, focusing on organized crime, alternative measures, rehabilitation, and comparative international experiences. Contribute to research and the drafting of briefs, reports, technical documents, training materials, and advocacy content on prison reform, human rights, and crime prevention. Assist in preparing agendas, background materials, and logistical arrangements for meetings and capacity-building activities. Participate actively in meetings and events. Coordinate and communicate with national and international partners, including scheduling and taking meeting minutes. Draft, edit, and proofread official documents and correspondence in Spanish. Perform other related duties as required.
Work Experience
Previous academic or professional experience in criminal justice, prison management, organized crime prevention, or related areas is required. Experience with the UN or similar international organizations is desirable. Experience supporting capacity-building within prison systems or law enforcement institutions is also desirable.
