Organizational Context
The United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA), specifically the Financing for Sustainable Development Office (FSDO) and its International Tax and Development Cooperation Branch (ITDCB), seeks an intern. This role supports the Capacity Development Unit, focusing on financing for sustainable development and international tax cooperation to aid developing countries.
Job Purpose
This internship aims to provide practical experience within the UN Secretariat's Department of Economic and Social Affairs, supporting the International Tax and Development Cooperation Branch. The intern will contribute to capacity development programs focused on financing for sustainable development, particularly in international tax cooperation and domestic resource mobilization. This involves assisting developing countries in strengthening their tax authorities. The role offers exposure to diverse tax-related issues and intergovernmental processes, contributing to the UN's broader sustainable development agenda and providing valuable learning opportunities for the intern.
Responsibilities
The intern will provide crucial support to the Capacity Development Unit within the International Tax and Development Cooperation Branch. Key duties include assisting in drafting, reviewing, and preparing various documents such as papers, presentations, studies, and reports. The intern will attend and summarize conferences and meetings, both in-person and virtual, and assist with meeting organization and outreach. Research and analysis of tax matters, including double tax treaties, transfer pricing, BEPS, digital economy taxation, and environmental taxation, will be a significant part of the role. Data collection for analyses, workshop surveys, and monitoring/evaluation of projects is required. Additionally, the intern will support communication strategies, prepare briefing materials for senior officials, and follow intergovernmental meetings.
Work Experience
Professional work experience is not required for this internship. However, a field of study closely related to economic affairs, international tax, or sustainable development is necessary. Applicants must be computer literate in standard software applications.
