Evaluation, Compliance, and Risk Management Intern
Organizational Context
The United Nations Department of Safety and Security (UNDSS) provides global leadership, operational support, and oversight for the UN Security Management System. UNDSS enables the safe and effective delivery of UN programs in challenging environments. This internship is within the Office of the Chief of Staff (CoS) in the Insight and Accountability Unit (IAU), supporting senior management on strategic planning and the UN mandate.
Job Purpose
This internship offers a unique opportunity to gain valuable experience within the UN Department of Safety and Security (UNDSS), specifically in the Office of the Chief of Staff's Insight and Accountability Unit. The role supports senior management in strategic planning and contributes to the UN's mandate by ensuring the safety and security of personnel. The intern will gain practical skills in risk management, evaluation, and lessons learned processes, contributing to the UN's mission of enabling program activities through trusted security leadership. This position provides a fulfilling environment where work directly or indirectly supports peace, security, human rights, and the Sustainable Development Goals, benefiting humanity globally.
Responsibilities
Assist in preparing materials and summaries for various committee meetings, including Local Risk Management, Working Group, and Country Team meetings. Analyze and identify internal controls and mitigation measures for identified risks. Update Risk Registers, Risk Treatment Response Plans, and Scorecards. Conduct research, compile information, and prepare background documents. Identify, analyze, and interpret data and patterns using extensive research from credible sources. Employ strategic thinking and data-driven techniques for quantitative and qualitative analysis. Critically evaluate information and data to support assigned tasks. Support technical communication and coordination with internal and external stakeholders on UNDSS insight and innovation initiatives. Assist in developing and designing interactive web platforms for visualizations and knowledge products. Support the production of reports, presentations, and infographics through professional formatting and design. Provide support in translating data and information into analytics and reporting. Assist in drafting, editing, and revising briefs, reports, and other programmatic documents. Conduct timely research on topics relevant to the Department. Assist in preparing for meetings and contribute to data management functions. Draft correspondence and talking points based on relevant data and information, and assist with the preparation and dissemination of meeting notes and other materials.
Work Experience
Professional work experience is not required for this internship. However, a field of study closely related to the internship is necessary. Proficiency in standard software applications (e.g., MS Office 365) is required. Experience with data analytics and business intelligence platforms is considered a strong asset. The ability to draft articles and make concise notes is desirable.
