Risk Knowledge Intern
Organizational Context
The United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) is the UN system's focal point for coordinating disaster reduction efforts globally. Based in Geneva with regional offices, UNDRR guides, monitors, and reports on the Sendai Framework implementation. This internship is situated within the UNDRR Regional Office for the Arab States (ROAS) in Cairo, Egypt, supporting its mission to reduce disaster risk.
Job Purpose
This internship aims to provide practical experience in disaster risk reduction (DRR) within the UNDRR Regional Office for the Arab States in Cairo. The intern will support the Risk Knowledge & Analysis team by conducting research on DRR in the Arab States, analyzing disaster-related data, and contributing to the development of knowledge products and policy support documents. The role is designed to enhance the intern's understanding of global DRR frameworks and regional challenges, while contributing to UNDRR's mandate of increasing global awareness and catalyzing action to reduce disaster risk.
Responsibilities
The intern will conduct desk reviews on disaster risk reduction in Arab States, focusing on local hazards, and prepare background notes for meetings. Responsibilities include tracking regional risk knowledge reports and summarizing emerging trends. The role involves collecting and organizing disaster impact data, supporting the development of country and hazard profiles, and drafting fact sheets and case studies. Additionally, the intern will take notes and prepare summaries for workshops, assist in planning and implementing risk knowledge events, and document lessons learned. Policy support includes drafting concept notes, talking points, and briefs, and providing input for regional coordination meetings.
Work Experience
Interns do not require prior work experience. However, computer literacy in standard software applications, including MS Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), is essential. The ability to design surveys and polls is desirable. Knowledge of information technology management is also considered a plus.

Research and analysis, data collection and organization, report summarization, knowledge product development, event planning and support, policy document drafting, strong written and verbal communication in English, computer literacy (MS Office Suite), survey design (desirable), IT management knowledge (desirable).
