Organizational Context
The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) works with States and civil society to prevent crime, illicit drugs, and terrorism, promoting security, peace, and development. UNODC provides technical assistance, fosters knowledge, and strengthens institutional capacities across the region. This role, an Organized Crime Analyst for the Andean Region and Southern Cone, reports to the Head of the Organized Crime Area.
Job Purpose
This internship aims to provide technical support and advisory services to the UNODC's Organized Crime Area, focusing on the Andean Region and Southern Cone. The role contributes to UNODC's mandate by assisting in the design, development, and analysis of organized crime characterizations, diagnostics, and studies at local and regional levels. This involves implementing quantitative and qualitative research, developing technical tools to strengthen law enforcement capacities, and identifying regional best practices. The intern will also support the formulation of public policies and strategies to address organized crime in border areas, preparing technical reports on transnational criminal groups and associated illicit activities, and identifying strategic lines of action to combat transnational crime. This role is crucial for enhancing UNODC's capacity to provide evidence-based advisory support and strengthen institutional responses to organized crime challenges.
Responsibilities
The Organized Crime Analyst will provide technical support and advisory services for the design, development, and analysis of organized crime characterizations, diagnostics, and studies at local and regional levels. This includes designing and implementing quantitative and qualitative research methodologies to assess organized crime in border areas and its regional impact. A key responsibility involves developing technical tools to enhance institutional capacities for law enforcement and to identify effective typologies and regional best practices. The role also entails offering advisory services for the formulation of public policies, plans, programs, and strategies specifically targeting organized crime in border regions. Furthermore, the analyst will prepare comprehensive technical reports on organized crime, analyzing the influence of transnational criminal groups and the convergence of associated illicit activities. Finally, the analyst will conduct studies and analyses to identify strategic lines of action for addressing transnational crime in border areas effectively.

Skills
Computer literacy in standard software (MS Word, PowerPoint, Teams). Keen interest in UN work and commitment to its Charter ideals. Ability to interact successfully with diverse cultural backgrounds. Fluency in spoken and written Spanish and English. Desirable: Ability to draft news articles/social media posts, design surveys/polls. Desirable: Knowledge of an additional official UN language.
