The United Nations Information Service (UNIS) Vienna, part of the Department of Global Communications, acts as the local voice of the UN in Austria, Hungary, Slovakia, and Slovenia. It promotes understanding of UN work and goals through outreach to media, government, academia, schools, and civil society. This internship is within the News and Media Unit.
Job Purpose
This internship in the News and Media Unit of UNIS Vienna aims to support the team in promoting an informed understanding of the United Nations' work and goals. The intern will contribute to media monitoring, content creation for various platforms, and event support. This role provides practical experience in international communications and public information within a UN context, assisting in outreach efforts to diverse stakeholders in four client countries. The position is unpaid and based in Vienna for a six-month duration, offering hands-on involvement in daily communication activities.
Responsibilities
Monitor German language Austrian media for national and UN-related topics, translating and summarizing articles for daily press reviews. Follow Austrian government press conferences, summarizing key points. Draft content for social media platforms (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram), including creating visuals with CANVA. Produce a variety of media texts in German and English, such as press releases and web content. Assist with research on specific topics. Support the production of multimedia content (videos, photos, audio) to promote UN initiatives. Help prepare, implement, and follow up on press briefings, outreach events, and high-level visits. Perform other necessary tasks to support the News and Media Unit's operations.
Work Experience
Professional work experience is not required for this internship. However, a field of study closely related to the internship is necessary. Demonstrated ability to interact with diverse cultural backgrounds is important. Experience in drafting news articles, social media posts, and creating visual content using CANVA is highly desirable.
