Organizational Context
This position is within the International Civil Service Commission (ICSC) in New York. The Research Assistant will report to a Statistician in the Cost-of-Living Division (COLD), contributing to the division's data collection and analysis efforts for cost-of-living surveys.
Job Purpose
The Research Assistant will support the Cost-of-Living Division (COLD) by assisting in the monitoring and evaluation of ongoing price data collections for cost-of-living surveys. This involves assessing the likelihood of real-time price information, summarizing pertinent materials, and collecting/analyzing data to prepare background information for statisticians. The role also serves as a focal point for surveys, liaising with local coordinators and stakeholders, and assisting in the collection, analysis, and reporting of survey data. The position contributes to ensuring the accuracy and validity of statistical material, particularly consumer price indices, and supports the dissemination of survey results and related information.
Responsibilities
Assist in monitoring and evaluating ongoing price data collections for cost-of-living surveys, assessing real-time price information, and preparing background materials. Act as a focal point for place-to-place or housing surveys, maintaining contact with local Survey Coordinators and stakeholders. Support the collection and analysis of survey data, prepare reports for dissemination, and respond to queries on survey results. Examine statistical material for accuracy and validity, making adjustments as needed, particularly for consumer price indices. Participate in team discussions on survey result implementation and collaborate on pricing agent selection. Maintain and update files and databases, generating reports, tables, charts, and graphs. Assist with visualizations and updating information materials, such as web pages.
Work Experience
A minimum of 7 years of experience in data collection, research, and reporting in statistics, economics, or related fields is required. This requirement is reduced to 5 years for candidates with a first-level university degree or higher. Experience in cost-of-living measurement is desirable.
