Political Affairs Intern/Support the work of the DRC IOT
Organizational Context
The Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs-Department of Peace Operations-Shared Structure (DPPA-DPO) seeks an intern to support the work of the DRC IOT. This UN-paid internship is for 3-6 months, with flexible work arrangements (hybrid, remote, or in-person) in New York City. The role is part of a team within the Office.
Job Purpose
This internship provides an opportunity to gain practical experience within the UN Secretariat, specifically supporting the Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs-Department of Peace Operations-Shared Structure. The intern will contribute to monitoring and analyzing political and security developments, particularly concerning MONUSCO's mandate. Key contributions include preparing regular updates for principals, summarizing relevant public and academic articles, and drafting weekly reports for the Security Council. The role also involves assisting in the creation of communication materials, documenting meeting minutes, and conducting research on political economy and peacekeeping-related issues. This position is designed to offer hands-on experience in international affairs and peacekeeping operations.
Responsibilities
The intern will monitor and analyze key political and security developments, focusing on the implementation of MONUSCO's mandate. Responsibilities include providing regular updates to principals using situation reports, press clippings, and media reports. The intern will also monitor general issues, summarize public and academic articles, and correspondences related to peacekeeping. A key duty is drafting weekly reports on the political and security situation for the Security Council. Additionally, the intern will assist in preparing communication materials and presentations, participate in meetings, and draft minutes. The role involves conducting individual research assignments, supporting data-driven approaches, and contributing to briefing materials on political economy, cross-cutting peacekeeping issues, and other relevant topics.
Work Experience
Professional work experience is not required for this internship. However, a field of study closely related to the internship's focus is necessary. Familiarity with the African context is considered desirable.
Skills
Political and security analysis, report drafting, research, data analysis, communication material preparation, meeting minute taking, familiarity with peacekeeping operations, knowledge of the African context (desirable), fluency in English, knowledge of an additional official UN language (advantage).
