The Justice and Corrections Service (JCS) within the UN Secretariat's Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs-Department of Peace Operations serves as a centre of expertise on rule of law, justice, and corrections. Job Purpose
This internship aims to support the substantive work of the Justice and Corrections Service (JCS), with a specific focus on justice and corrections within UN peace operations. The role will contribute to areas such as criminal accountability, gender parity, prison training, and strategic engagement. The intern will assist in implementing projects, conducting research and analysis, and supporting policy development. This position offers a valuable opportunity to gain practical experience in international rule of law initiatives and contribute to the UN's peacebuilding efforts by supporting essential justice and prison services in post-conflict settings.
Responsibilities
The intern will support the Justice and Corrections Service (JCS) by assisting with project implementation, including research, analysis, and drafting of case studies and background papers. Responsibilities include providing administrative support for meetings with internal and external partners and Member States, and contributing to policy and guidance development through research on legal, judicial, and correctional reform issues. The intern will also conduct research and analysis on current developments related to JCS work, assist desk officers in supporting peace operations, and attend relevant meetings. Additional duties involve note-taking, preparing summaries, and assisting with public information materials and presentations for senior staff.
Work Experience
Professional work experience is not required for this internship. However, applicants must be students in a relevant field of study and meet the specified educational criteria. The role involves research, analysis, and administrative support, providing an opportunity to gain practical experience in international rule of law and peacebuilding.
Skills
Research and analysis, drafting case studies and background papers, administrative coordination, meeting support, policy and guidance development, knowledge of standard software applications (MS Word, MS PowerPoint, MS Teams), fluency in English, knowledge of an additional UN official language (advantageous).
