This role is within the UNEP Mining Unit, which focuses on responsible mining and the sustainable use of mineral resources, including circularity.
Job Purpose
This consultancy role aims to lead UNEP's work on global mining legacy funds and provide technical support for circularity metrics. The position involves programme development, stakeholder engagement, and implementation support. The consultant will refine concepts, coordinate activities, assess pilot projects, develop fund proposals, and facilitate consultations. The role contributes to advancing circularity across mineral and metal value chains and promoting responsible mining practices globally. The consultant will report to the programme officer coordinating global mining legacy funds within the Industry and Economy Division.
Responsibilities
Lead the development and implementation of the AR3, including concept refinement, coordination, and stakeholder engagement. Conduct assessments, selection, and implementation of pilot country activities, providing technical guidance and documenting lessons learned. Develop proposals for the Global Legacy Fund, including governance and operational frameworks. Lead stakeholder consultations and integrate feedback into implementation plans. Prepare progress reports, technical briefings, and presentations for senior management. Provide technical expertise for the circularity work stream, refining metrics and frameworks. Support the development and finalization of business cases, technical analyses, and knowledge products to advance circularity in mineral and metal value chains.
Work Experience
A minimum of five years of work experience in mine closure, remediation of legacy mining sites, sustainable consumption and production, and circular economy is required. Experience working with national governments in developing countries, the private sector (especially mining), and international organizations is also necessary. Experience with the UN System is an advantage.
Skills
Sophisticated writing skills for technical documents. Strong verbal communication and stakeholder liaison abilities. Experience with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint). Knowledge of data analysis and standard statistical techniques. Experience in developing industry mining standards is desirable.
