Its Ecosystems Division supports international and national partners in environmental policy implementation and capacity building. This role is within the Biodiversity, People and Landscapes Unit in Nairobi, reporting to the "Vanishing Treasures" Project Manager.
Job Purpose
This role supports the implementation of the Virunga component of the "Vanishing Treasures" project and related UN Decade initiatives. The purpose is to contribute to climate change adaptation for vulnerable mountain species and ecosystems in the Greater Virunga Landscape. This involves enhancing adaptive capacity, maintaining ecosystem services, protecting flagship species, and promoting alternative livelihoods for local communities, ensuring synergy between conservation and adaptation efforts.
Responsibilities
Key responsibilities include facilitating the development, implementation, and monitoring of project activities in the Greater Virunga Landscape, particularly in Uganda and Rwanda. This involves conducting research on mountain biodiversity and wildlife, providing substantive support for policy coordination, and preparing project-related documents and reports. The role also entails undertaking communication and outreach activities, developing training materials, and contributing to data analysis for planning and reporting. Additionally, it involves collaborating with partners to develop regional project proposals, assess case studies, and contribute to policy briefs and innovative financing tools.
Work Experience
A minimum of five years of progressive experience in project/programme management is required. Essential experience includes working in the Greater Virunga Landscape, stakeholder engagement, and great ape conservation. Experience with multi-country biodiversity projects or ecosystem restoration is desirable.
