Organizational Context
The Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species (CMS) is a global treaty under the UN Environment Programme (UNEP). The CMS Secretariat, administratively supported by UNEP, focuses on the conservation of migratory species and their habitats. This internship is based within the Science Team at the CMS Secretariat in Bonn, Germany, with the possibility of remote work.
Job Purpose
This internship offers a valuable opportunity to support the CMS Science Team in coordinating the implementation of mandates related to crosscutting conservation issues. The role involves assisting with various tasks crucial to the team's operations, including maintaining species databases, supporting working groups, and contributing to the development of strategies and action plans. The intern will gain practical experience in international environmental policy and conservation efforts, contributing directly to the UN's work in protecting migratory wildlife and their habitats. This position is ideal for students seeking hands-on experience in a dynamic international environmental organization.
Responsibilities
Assist in implementing decisions from the 15th Conference of the Parties (COP15) concerning climate change, wildlife health, illegal taking of species, connectivity, and light pollution. Support the planning and coordination of working groups, attend meetings, and take notes. Contribute to maintaining the CMS Appendices and online species databases. Aid in developing strategies, action plans, and project proposals for fundraising. Assist in preparing and following up on meetings and workshops, and preparing background documents. Help develop communication products, websites, and capacity-building materials. Participate in relevant Secretariat meetings and support other work programme aspects.
Work Experience
Professional work experience is not required for this internship. However, applicants must be pursuing or have completed a relevant university degree. Familiarity with standard computer software is necessary. Experience in analyzing scientific data is considered desirable.
Skills
Assisting with project implementation, planning and coordination, note-taking, database maintenance, strategy development, meeting preparation and follow-up, content creation (websites, publications, presentations), and communication material development. Proficiency in standard software applications. Ability to analyze scientific data is desirable. Fluency in English is required; French or Spanish knowledge is a plus.
