Job Purpose
This internship within the Security Sector Reform Unit (SSRU) aims to support UN peace operations and special political missions with Security Sector Reform (SSR) mandates. The role will provide strategic and technical advice to UN country presences, contributing to the development of effective, inclusive, and accountable security institutions. The intern will assist in various activities, including research, analysis, drafting documents, and supporting consultations, thereby gaining practical experience in international security sector reform and peacebuilding efforts. The position offers flexibility in work arrangements, including part-time and remote options, depending on organizational needs and candidate circumstances.
Responsibilities
Support country- and region-specific activities, including scheduling meetings, attending Security Council meetings, taking notes, and preparing readouts. Review and summarize relevant documents. Assist in developing knowledge and guidance tools through literature reviews and research on best practices and lessons learned. Gather, research, analyze, and present information from diverse sources. Aid in drafting various documents and managing data. Support the organization of expert consultations and engagements with Member States, including annual meetings of senior SSR practitioners and the UN Group of Friends of SSR.
Work Experience
Professional work experience is not required for this internship. However, a field of study closely related to security sector reform or international affairs is essential. Applicants must be students in their final year of a bachelor's, master's, or Ph.D. program, or have completed such a program.
Skills
Standard software applications (MS Word, MS PowerPoint, MS Teams), ability to draft news articles/social media posts, ability to design surveys and polls, research, analysis, information gathering, data management, meeting support, document summarization, and strong written and verbal communication in English and French.
