Organizational Context
The Department of Peace Operations (DPO) serves as a center of excellence for peace operations, preventing, responding to, and managing conflict. The Office of Military Affairs (OMA), within DPO, focuses on military doctrine and performance. This internship is located in the OMA, Military Doctrine and Performance Section, reporting to the Senior Military Affairs Officer.
Job Purpose
This internship aims to provide practical experience within the Office of Military Affairs (OMA) of the Department of Peace Operations (DPO). The intern will support the Military Doctrine and Performance Section by assisting with various tasks related to military affairs and policy. This role contributes to the DPO's mandate of preventing and resolving conflict through inclusive political solutions by supporting the analysis, research, and documentation efforts of the section. The internship offers exposure to intergovernmental processes and the operational aspects of peace operations.
Responsibilities
Assist in drafting and preparing background documents, reports, issue briefs, talking points, articles, presentations, and meeting minutes. Support the organization of intergovernmental meetings, conferences, and side events, providing substantive, logistical, and administrative assistance in virtual and hybrid modalities. Help manage extrabudgetary funds and grants. Collect and systematize information on military performance and policy, conducting research and analysis for briefings. Provide editorial support for military guidance documents, ensuring consistency with UN style. Support policy development by reviewing emerging issues and trends in military affairs. Assist in maintaining databases, websites, and mailing lists. Perform other related duties as assigned.
Work Experience
Professional work experience is not required for this internship. However, a field of study closely related to the internship is necessary. Applicants should have good knowledge of standard software applications, particularly MS Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Teams).
Skills
Proficiency in MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams). Ability to draft notes, content papers, and policy documents is desirable. Knowledge of finance and budget is highly desirable. Ability to interact with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds. Keen interest in the work of the United Nations and commitment to its ideals.
