Organizational Context
The United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) and the World Health Organization Regional Office for Europe (WHO/Europe) jointly provide secretariat functions for the Protocol on Water and Health. This role supports the UNECE part of the secretariat, contributing to the implementation of the Protocol's work plan and decisions of the Meeting of the Parties.
Job Purpose
This role serves to provide crucial support to the UNECE part of the joint secretariat for the Protocol on Water and Health. The primary purpose is to assist in the servicing of intergovernmental bodies and contribute to thematic technical areas. This includes preparing for key meetings, developing substantive documents, and providing technical support on critical water and sanitation issues such as climate resilience and disaster preparedness. The role directly contributes to the effective functioning of the Protocol and the achievement of its objectives in protecting human health and well-being through better water management and ecosystem protection.
Responsibilities
Provide comprehensive support for the preparation of intergovernmental meetings, including developing concept notes, substantive documents, and managing correspondence with Parties and countries. Assist in the preparation of the Task Force on Target Setting and Reporting, focusing on disaster and emergency preparedness for water and sanitation systems. Support the development of guidance documents on climate resilience for water and sanitation systems and services. Offer technical assistance to the secretariat on emerging challenges in water and sanitation, including disaster preparedness, climate resilience, and ambient water quality. Contribute to communication efforts, website content, presentation preparation, fundraising, and donor reporting.
Work Experience
A minimum of five years of work experience in water management, water and sanitation, public health, or environmental affairs is required. Two years of experience within the UN Common System or a similar international organization is desirable. Experience in disaster preparedness, ambient water quality, climate resilience, or organizing intergovernmental meetings is also desirable.
