Organizational Context
The United Nations Development Coordination Office (UNDCO) operates as a stand-alone coordination office within the UN Secretariat, managing the Resident Coordinator system. Following a 2026 recalibration, it focuses on accelerating the 2030 Agenda and embracing UN 2.0 principles. This Regional Director role, based in Amman, reports to the ASG/Director of UNDCO and supports the Chair of the UN Sustainable Development Group.
Job Purpose
The Regional Director serves as a strategic leader, thought leader, and partnership broker for sustainable development, driving SDG acceleration at regional and country levels. This role involves convening stakeholders, providing strategic direction, and strengthening collaboration with regional entities and UN agencies. The Director integrates diverse development approaches, leveraging UN 2.0 capabilities like foresight and data analytics to foster innovation and resilience. Key functions include supporting Resident Coordinators, managing regional office operations, overseeing resource mobilization, and ensuring effective implementation of UN reform initiatives, all while promoting a mission-driven, collaborative culture.
Responsibilities
The Regional Director leads the UNDCO Regional Office, focusing on thought leadership, partnerships, and SDG acceleration. This includes convening regional development dialogues, directing collaboration with UN entities and regional bodies, and developing strategic partnerships. The role involves integrating complex development approaches, applying foresight and risk analytics, and influencing stakeholders with UN 2.0 skills. Responsibilities extend to coordinating regional communications, supporting resource mobilization, ensuring quality assurance for UN Sustainable Development Cooperation Frameworks, and providing strategic guidance to Resident Coordinators and UN Country Teams. Additionally, the Director manages the regional office's strategy, budget, and operations, oversees staff, promotes digital transformation, and contributes to UNDCO's policy formulation and reporting.
Work Experience
A minimum of 15 years of progressive experience in development cooperation coordination, with at least 10 years in senior international leadership roles involving interagency collaboration. Requires 5 years of field experience, demonstrated strategy/policy formulation in development coordination, and experience in organizational reform/change management. Experience in leading multicultural teams and managing budgets is essential. Experience with the UN Resident Coordinator system, regional coordination, digital tools, foresight, behavioral science, and strategic resource mobilization is desirable.
