Organizational Context
This position is within the Engineering and Facilities Management unit of the Mission Support Service for the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), based in Tripoli. The role reports to the Chief Engineer and is integral to the mission's operational support.
Job Purpose
The Engineering Assistant is responsible for supervising junior staff and performing technical tasks within specific trade and craft areas such as carpentry, electrical, plumbing, and welding. This includes installing, commissioning, operating, and maintaining systems according to safety standards. The role involves preparing technical reports, managing work orders, inspecting quality, diagnosing issues, and planning work effectively. Additionally, the incumbent will assist in preparing designs, drawings, and cost estimates, coordinating with counterparts, training junior staff, and managing materials and equipment procurement to ensure smooth operations and compliance with environmental policies.
Responsibilities
Supervise junior staff in trade areas like carpentry, electrical, plumbing, and welding. Install, commission, operate, and maintain systems adhering to safety codes and standards. Prepare and review technical reports and assessments for work requirements. Develop, interpret, and close out technical work orders. Maintain records of inventories and work orders. Inspect work quality and performance, diagnose, and resolve problems. Plan and organize work for effective execution. Prepare designs, drawings, and cost estimates. Coordinate with engineering counterparts and provide instructions and training to junior staff. Recommend and ensure availability of necessary materials and equipment. Develop acquisition plans for engineering materials and monitor supply quality. Ensure compliance with environmental and waste management policies.
Work Experience
A minimum of seven years of progressive experience in construction, commissioning, operations, or maintenance of facilities and infrastructure within a relevant trade is required. This is reduced to five years for candidates with a university degree. Experience with AutoCAD, developing technical drawings, Schedule of Rates (SORs), Scope of Works (SOW), UN/international organizations, Supply Chain Planning Tools, and Real Estate Management is desirable.
