Organizational Context
The United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) is a global agreement addressing desertification, land degradation, and drought. This role supports UNCCD's work on Rangelands and Pastoralists, engaging with Indigenous Communities and the Silk Road Campaign, in preparation for COP17.
Job Purpose
This consultancy aims to support the UNCCD's critical work on Rangelands and Pastoralists, particularly in the lead-up to COP17. The role will contribute to elevating the global importance of these areas, which are vital for ecosystem services and support billions of people. The consultant will assist in promoting inclusive governance and investment in sustainable rangeland management, aligning with global efforts to combat desertification and achieve sustainable development. This includes supporting specific campaigns, engaging with indigenous communities, and facilitating stakeholder coordination to ensure the success of COP17 objectives and related initiatives.
Responsibilities
Provide substantive inputs and support to UNCCD's ongoing work on Rangelands and Pastoralists, contributing to preparations for COP17. Assist with the Silk Road campaign and UNCCD's engagement with Indigenous Communities. Coordinate with stakeholders, partners, experts, and relevant institutions to foster collaboration. Contribute to knowledge management by synthesizing technical and policy materials. Support country engagement with key G20 nations, particularly China, by engaging with stakeholders including the private sector and think tanks. Provide coordination and substantive support for G20-related work on rangelands and pastoralism, including research, strategic planning, and partnership development. Assist in organizing COP17 events and developing presentations and knowledge products.
Work Experience
A minimum of two years of progressively responsible experience in anthropology, political science, international relations, law, or development management is required. Experience working in countries affected by desertification, land degradation, and drought is desirable. Proven ability to work independently and coordinate across diverse stakeholders is also desirable.
Skills
Analytical, drafting, and interpersonal communication skills. Strong political judgment and discretion. Ability to think strategically and with a results-oriented approach. Fluency in English and Chinese is required.
