Organizational Context
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority, setting the agenda and promoting the coherent implementation of environmental dimensions of sustainable development. The Ecosystems Division engages with partners to develop ecosystem-based solutions. This role sits within the Biodiversity and Land Branch, focusing on mainstreaming biodiversity economy and conducting the scoping phase for the Nature for Health initiative in Kenya.
Job Purpose
This consultancy supports the scoping phase of the Nature for Health (N4H) initiative in Kenya, aiming to co-create an Implementation Project Document. The role will foster collaboration among stakeholders to enhance understanding of the links between environmental, human, and animal health, promoting a preventive approach. It will contribute to UNEP's broader work on biodiversity, landscapes, and sustainable development, including the development of innovative economic tools for conservation and strengthening the biodiversity economy approach across various landscapes. The initiative seeks to identify gaps, barriers, and drivers for a transition to resilient livelihoods based on sustainable biodiversity use, informing policy and supporting upscaling efforts.
Responsibilities
The Project Manager will coordinate the scoping phase of the Nature for Health initiative in Kenya, including planning and organizing stakeholder workshops, bilateral meetings, and focus groups to assess the situation, engage stakeholders, and identify zoonotic spillover risks and prevention interventions. Responsibilities include co-facilitating the development of the N4H partnership and its programmatic structure, and supporting the design of the Implementation Phase by gathering contributions for the project document. The role involves project planning, timely delivery of the Implementation Project Document, and ensuring accurate record-keeping. Additionally, the manager will develop an internal report on biodiversity economy case studies and impacts, and a policy brief highlighting enabling conditions and innovative approaches for an equitable economic transition based on sustainable biodiversity use. Coordination of a policy dialogue session on bioeconomy at CBD CoP17 is also required.
Work Experience
A minimum of 5 years of postgraduate work experience in project management and multi-stakeholder partnership building is required. Experience in organizing workshops, cross-sectoral collaboration, communication, planning, writing, and reporting is essential. Desirable experience includes work in sustainable biodiversity and landscape management, conservation, restoration, Biodiversity Economy Projects implementation, and System Thinking approaches.
