Organizational Context
This Senior Programme Management Officer position is within the Office of the Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs in New York. Reporting to the Chief of Office, the role is a key component of the Under-Secretary-General's team, contributing to the department's strategic objectives and operations.
Job Purpose
The Senior Programme Management Officer is responsible for leading the development, implementation, and evaluation of assigned programmes and projects within the Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs. This includes directing subordinates, monitoring progress, and identifying corrective actions. The role also involves advising on complex public information and communication issues, overseeing digital media campaigns, managing outreach activities, and fostering collaboration with internal and external stakeholders. A key aspect is ensuring gender mainstreaming in all planned actions and providing strategic communication advice to leadership to enhance public engagement and advance the department's work.
Responsibilities
Lead the development, implementation, and evaluation of programmes and projects, directing staff in planning, monitoring, and assessment. Review relevant documents, identify priorities, and propose corrective actions. Ensure gender mainstreaming in all departmental actions. Supervise the preparation of various written outputs, including reports, studies, and communication materials. Provide technical and policy advice on public information and communication, overseeing social media and digital campaigns to enhance outreach. Manage outreach activities and capacity-building initiatives. Serve as a spokesperson and establish partnerships. Ensure effective staff utilization, supervision, and development through guidance and mentorship. Direct research and programme evaluation. Provide substantive support for meetings and conferences. Lead data analysis to identify trends for planning and decision-making.
Work Experience
A minimum of ten years of progressive experience in project or programme management, administration, or a related area is required. Experience providing strategic support to senior officials is also necessary. Experience in supervising the preparation of external communication and public information products is required. Field experience in UN peace operations is desirable.
