The International Trade Centre (ITC), a joint agency of the UN and WTO, supports SME internationalization and sustainable development. This role is within the "Ethiopia & Ghana: Strengthening digital trade and agritech market systems" project, an initiative with the Austrian Development Agency (ADA). The project focuses on strengthening digital trade ecosystems through an inception phase assessing future support programmes.
Job Purpose
The National Consultant will lead the country-level Environmental and Climate Assessment for Ethiopia as part of the "Ethiopia & Ghana: Strengthening digital trade and agritech market systems" project. This involves conducting desk research, stakeholder consultations, and substantive analysis to identify environmental risks, climate vulnerabilities, and opportunities within the digital services market. The consultant will apply a market systems development approach, ensuring findings inform the design of future interventions. The ultimate goal is to produce a comprehensive report with actionable recommendations for climate and environmental mainstreaming, contributing to the project's inception phase and future implementation.
Responsibilities
Conduct a comprehensive Environmental and Climate Assessment for Ethiopia, including desk research and stakeholder consultations, focusing on environmental risks, climate vulnerabilities, and opportunities within the digital ecosystem. Apply the agreed analytical framework to identify and assess risks and opportunities across the value chain, analyzing their impact on MSMEs and digital solutions. Facilitate stakeholder consultations with relevant actors to validate findings and maintain records. Consolidate all findings into a detailed report (15-20 pages) covering climate trends, risk/opportunity mapping, impact analysis, and recommendations for mainstreaming climate and environmental considerations. Ensure the final report is analytically sound, well-structured, and includes actionable recommendations, incorporating feedback and contributing to presentations. Coordinate with the project team and participate in regular calls to ensure timely delivery of outputs.
Work Experience
Requires at least 5 years of relevant professional experience in climate change, environmental sustainability, trade, or private sector development. Experience with international organizations or development programmes, and strong knowledge of Ethiopia’s digital economy are also necessary.
Skills
Proven experience in climate risk analysis, environmental sustainability, or related fields, preferably linked to trade or private sector development. Strong analytical and report-writing skills. Experience in stakeholder consultations and qualitative research. Ability to translate analysis into practical recommendations. Effective communication skills. Ability to work independently and meet deadlines.
