Human Rights Intern
Organizational Context
The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) East Africa Multi-Country Office (MCO) in Nairobi, Kenya, is responsible for strengthening international human rights mechanisms, promoting equality, combating impunity, and integrating human rights into development. This internship offers students exposure to UN work within the OHCHR Secretariat.
Job Purpose
This internship provides a framework for students to gain practical experience within the OHCHR East Africa Multi-Country Office (MCO) in Nairobi. The role supports the MCO's mission to protect human rights, empower individuals to realize their rights, and assist duty-bearers in upholding these rights. The intern will contribute to monitoring human rights developments, drafting reports, disseminating information, engaging stakeholders, and supporting initiatives to integrate human rights into policies and plans. This role is crucial for the MCO's operational effectiveness and its mandate to advance human rights across the region.
Responsibilities
Monitor and analyze human rights developments and trends, including economic, social, and cultural rights, within the MCO's covered countries. Research and draft internal and external notes and reports. Prepare daily news updates on the human rights situation in the region. Support the dissemination of international human rights standards and OHCHR activities on social media. Facilitate stakeholder engagement with UN human rights mechanisms. Assist in integrating human rights perspectives into national and regional development policies. Support the organization of workshops, seminars, meetings, and events. Take notes in meetings and conferences as requested. Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
