Job Purpose
The Economic Affairs Officer's purpose is to conduct economic and/or sector analysis, provide intergovernmental support on economic issues, and contribute to technical cooperation activities. This involves monitoring economic developments, designing and conducting studies, interpreting data, and formulating policy recommendations. The role supports intergovernmental bodies like the General Assembly and UNCTAD, and advises national governments on economic development. Additionally, officers may design and implement technical cooperation projects, conduct capacity-building activities, and analyze data to inform planning and decision-making.
Responsibilities
Key responsibilities include monitoring and analyzing economic developments, identifying emerging issues, and conducting in-depth studies on economic development, drafting reports and policy recommendations. The role involves interpreting econometric modeling results and formulating strategies for presentation to intergovernmental bodies. Providing substantive support to intergovernmental forums such as the General Assembly, UNCTAD, and regional commissions is crucial. Technical cooperation duties include designing, implementing, and monitoring projects, advising national governments, and conducting capacity-building workshops. The role also involves supporting junior staff, participating in inter-departmental initiatives, and utilizing data visualization methods for analysis and reporting.
Work Experience
A minimum of seven years of experience is required in economic research, analysis, policy formulation, and applying economic principles in development programs. Experience with data collection, processing, and analysis using quantitative/qualitative methods is essential. Experience in coordinating research, drafting knowledge products, and building strategic partnerships with governments or international organizations is also required.
