PUBLIC INFORMATION OFFICER (SOCIAL MEDIA/MULTIMEDIA NEWS)
Organizational Context
This position is within the Media Outreach and Spokesperson’s Office of the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) in Geneva. The incumbent reports to the Chief of the Media Outreach and Spokesperson’s Office, contributing to the office's external communications and engagement efforts.
Job Purpose
The Public Information Officer (Social Media/Multimedia News) is responsible for developing and producing high-impact multimedia content for OHCHR's social media platforms to inform and engage external audiences. This role requires exercising journalistic and political judgment for timely editorial decisions, planning strategic outreach via social media campaigns, and fostering collaborations. The purpose is to increase OHCHR's following and engagement, strengthen brand awareness, and promote effective social media usage to advance human rights objectives. The incumbent will also monitor trends, analyze sentiment, report on developments, and provide guidance and training on social media best practices within the UN system.
Responsibilities
Develop and produce high-impact multimedia content for OHCHR's social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, etc.) to inform and engage external audiences. Exercise journalistic and political judgment for timely editorial decisions on content. Plan and initiate strategic social media outreach campaigns and collaborate with UN-wide social media efforts. Identify and maintain relationships with key internal and external stakeholders to support content development and implementation. Increase OHCHR's social media following and engagement, strengthening brand awareness. Monitor and evaluate the impact of social media content, conduct social listening, identify trends, and advise management on appropriate actions. Ensure a principled, data, and audience-led approach to content creation. Report on developments, trends, and sentiment regarding OHCHR and human rights issues. Contribute to OHCHR communications campaigns through social media initiatives. Represent OHCHR in UN social media groups and liaise with focal points. Provide guidance and training to staff on effective social media use and advise management on strategic social media utilization.
Work Experience
A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in communications, public information, journalism, or public relations is required. Experience managing various social media platforms is essential. Desirable experience includes work in human rights at the international level, disseminating news on social media, and monitoring/analyzing social media results.
