Organizational Context
The United Nations Global Service Centre (UNGSC) in Brindisi, Italy, provides critical ICT services globally. This internship is within the Technologies Infrastructure Support Unit (TISU), responsible for data centre operations and the design, maintenance, and implementation of Internet of Things (IoT) solutions. The role supports the IoT team within the Service for Geospatial, Information and Telecommunications Technologies (SGITT).
Job Purpose
This six-month, full-time, unpaid internship aims to provide hands-on experience within the UNGSC's Technologies Infrastructure Support Unit (TISU). The intern will support the Internet of Things (IoT) team, contributing to the operational maintenance, testing, and development of IoT solutions. This role offers a significant learning opportunity about UNGSC operations and the UN system, allowing the intern to work as a full team member on projects that contribute to the organization's mission. The intern will gain practical experience in managing and enhancing IoT platforms and related technologies.
Responsibilities
The intern will assist with daily operational checks and routine maintenance of the IoT platform, including server health monitoring, software updates, and database verification. Responsibilities include lab testing, validation, platform deployment, and performance evaluations for new IoT research projects, with a focus on open-source frameworks. The role involves supporting Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) configuration, maintenance, and troubleshooting, as well as assisting with the development and maintenance of IoT documentation. Additionally, the intern will help with the installation, integration, and configuration of IoT sensors, and support research, testing, and evaluation of new sensors and technologies. Troubleshooting connectivity issues and performing other assigned tasks are also part of the role.
Work Experience
Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a strong academic background in a relevant field is essential. Desirable exposure includes Linux/Windows basics, networking, virtualization, monitoring systems, cabling, or electrical systems. Proficiency in standard software applications like MS Word, PowerPoint, and Teams is also required.
