National Consultant: Advisor on Environmental, Social and Governance Due Diligence System (ESG)
Organizational Context
The International Trade Centre's Ethical Fashion Initiative (EFI) in Kenya connects micro-entrepreneurs to global value chains, building capacity and fostering sustainable business linkages. This project, funded by AICS, aims to enhance the competitiveness of Kenyan artisanal and design businesses in the fashion industry. The role supports the implementation of an Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) Due Diligence System.
Job Purpose
This consultancy focuses on implementing and assessing an Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) Due Diligence System for the Ethical Fashion Initiative (EFI) in Kenya. The purpose is to support companies in the fashion value chain to uphold principles of sustainable, fair, and just work. The role involves conducting readiness assessments, developing enterprise profiles, mapping suppliers against ESG requirements, and collecting baseline data on socio-economic and environmental compliance. The ultimate goal is to enable businesses to build and manage equitable and environmentally responsible value chains, contributing to the project's objective of increasing the competitiveness and participation of Kenyan micro and small businesses in the international fashion industry.
Responsibilities
The consultant will conduct and implement recommendations from ESG readiness assessments, including developing corrective measures. Responsibilities include profiling beneficiary enterprises, mapping social enterprises and suppliers according to ESG requirements, and engaging with community groups. The role involves collecting baseline data on socio-economic and environmental compliance for community groups in Kenya, conducting impact assessments, and compiling order-based impact reports. Additionally, the consultant will provide support for integrating ESG components into production processes and analysis for different product types, ensuring compliance with local regulations and facilitating the registration of workshops and relevant authorities.
Work Experience
Experience working in a development context in Kenya is required. Experience within the artisan sector is also necessary. Experience in coordinating and leading groups is considered an advantage. Familiarity with ESG principles and due diligence systems in supply chains is expected.
Skills
Key skills include strong interpersonal and communication abilities (written and oral), good analytical skills, and the capacity to synthesize large amounts of complex information. Pro-active and initiative-driven behavior is essential. Proficiency in English and Kiswahili is required; knowledge of other local languages is an advantage.
