Data Center Assistant Internship

Organizational Context

The United Nations Global Service Centre (UNGSC) in Valencia, Spain, provides critical ICT services to UN missions worldwide. This internship is within the Technology Infrastructure Support Unit (TISU), which manages a twin data centre architecture ensuring resilient and highly available ICT services. The role supports TISU's operations and infrastructure monitoring.

Job Purpose

This six-month, full-time, unpaid internship aims to provide practical experience in data centre operations and infrastructure monitoring within the UNGSC's Technology Infrastructure Support Unit (TISU) in Valencia. The intern will support the team in maintaining the integrity and availability of ICT services by assisting with daily health checks of core infrastructure systems, managing hardware lifecycle tasks, tracking environmental and power metrics, supporting backup operations, and aiding in the implementation of access control systems. This role contributes to the reliable delivery of essential IT services to UN entities globally, offering a valuable learning opportunity in a dynamic international environment.

Responsibilities

Assist with daily health checks of data centre core infrastructure, including cooling, power autonomy, and fire suppression systems. Support hardware lifecycle management, encompassing inventory, racking/stacking, and cable management. Monitor and track environmental metrics, power utilization, and rack capacity within the data centre. Provide support for backup job verification and basic restore procedures. Assist in the design and implementation of Radio Frequency access control systems. Log and update incidents, requests, and changes in relevant management and reporting tools. Perform other assigned tasks to support the TISU team's operational objectives.

Work Experience

No professional work experience is required for this internship. However, a strong academic background in a relevant field is necessary. Desirable exposure includes Linux/Windows basics, networking, virtualization, monitoring systems, cabling, or electrical systems.
