Data Center Assistant Internship

Organizational Context

The United Nations Global Service Centre (UNGSC) in Brindisi, Italy, provides critical ICT services to UN missions worldwide. This internship is within the Technology Infrastructure Support Unit (TISU), which manages a twin data centre architecture ensuring resilient and highly available ICT services. The intern will report to the Chief of TISU.

Job Purpose

This six-month, full-time, unpaid internship aims to support the Technology Infrastructure Support Unit (TISU) in Brindisi with data centre operations and infrastructure monitoring. The intern will gain practical experience in maintaining critical ICT infrastructure, contributing to the reliable delivery of services to UN entities globally. This role provides an opportunity to learn about data centre management, hardware lifecycle, environmental monitoring, backup systems, and access control technologies within a professional international environment.

Responsibilities

The intern will assist with daily health checks of data centre core infrastructure, including cooling, power autonomy, and fire suppression systems. Responsibilities include supporting hardware lifecycle tasks such as inventory management, racking, and stacking, as well as cable management. The role involves tracking environmental metrics, power utilization, and rack capacity. Additionally, the intern will support backup job checks and basic restore scenarios, assist with the design and implementation of Radio Frequency access control systems, and log/update incidents, requests, and changes in management tools. Any other assigned tasks by the designated official will also be part of the duties.

Work Experience

Professional work experience is not required for this internship. However, a strong academic background in a relevant field is essential. Desirable experience includes exposure to Linux/Windows basics, networking, virtualization, monitoring systems, cabling, or electrical systems.

Skills

Proficiency in standard software applications (MS Word, PowerPoint, Teams). Desirable skills include basic knowledge of Linux/Windows, networking, virtualization, monitoring systems, cabling, and electrical systems. Strong communication skills in English are required.
