Organizational Context
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority. The Carpathian Convention Secretariat, administered by UNEP, promotes ratification and facilitates cooperation between signatory states. It supports research, communication, and the implementation of the Convention’s work programme, including the Carpathian Biodiversity Framework and Education for Sustainable Development initiatives.
Job Purpose
This role supports the Secretariat of the Carpathian Convention in Vienna, Austria, for an expected duration of 7 months. The Specialist will contribute to the implementation of key projects, including the Carpathian Biodiversity Framework and Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) initiatives. This involves providing input to strategic documents, supporting project activities, organizing meetings and events, and contributing to communication and dissemination efforts. The position aims to strengthen regional cooperation, enhance biodiversity conservation, and integrate ESD principles within the Carpathian region, aligning with global and EU frameworks.
Responsibilities
Contribute to the development of a revised International Action Plan on Conservation of Large Carnivores and Ecological Connectivity in the Carpathians. Support the implementation of projects such as CARPATHIAN LIFE and "Linking biodiversity, pastoralism and cultural heritage through ESD in the Carpathians." Assist in organizing Carpathian Convention meetings and events, including working groups and COP meetings. Provide contributions to the Carpathian ESD Expert Network, coordinating activities for Carpathian Day and developing educational resources. Prepare technical documents, policy notes, and briefing materials, ensuring scientific accuracy. Develop strategic approaches for strengthening thematic networks and contribute to resource mobilization strategies. Support the Carpathian Convention website, platforms, and database, and provide guidance for communication and dissemination activities.
Work Experience
A minimum of 3 years of experience in Education for Sustainable Development, Biodiversity, and Communication related to sustainable development is required. Familiarity with International ESD and Biodiversity Frameworks is necessary. Experience with Carpathian Convention activities is considered an asset.
