Organizational Context
The Information Systems Assistant role is within the Business Processes and Systems Support Section (BPSSS) of the Department of Operational Support (DOS) at the UN Secretariat. DOS provides comprehensive operational support across the Secretariat. BPSSS focuses on developing processes and structures for policy implementation and ensuring their reflection in enterprise systems, including training on Umoja and Inspira. The LMS Team within BPSSS enhances eLearning initiatives and supports Moodle-based courses.
Job Purpose
The Information Systems Assistant will support the Capacity Development and Operational Training Service (CDOTS) by participating in the development, programming, testing, and implementation of application systems and functionalities for training delivery platforms. This includes developing and testing configurations for learning management and e-learning systems, and assisting in the planning, design, and support of CDOTS projects. The role involves liaising with users to define requirements, supporting training needs assessments, and analyzing learning data. The assistant will also contribute to business improvement projects, install and monitor systems, prepare documentation, maintain e-learning platforms, and provide technical support for deployed training systems, ensuring user requests are addressed efficiently and effectively.
Responsibilities
Participate in the development, programming, testing, debugging, and implementation of new application systems, modules, and functionalities for training delivery platforms. Develop, test, and implement simple configurations and application components using UN IT standards, including learning management and e-learning systems. Act as a team member in planning, designing, developing, implementing, and supporting CDOTS projects, liaising with users to define platform requirements. Assist in designing Training Needs Assessment surveys and analyzing learning participation data. Contribute to business improvement projects, enhancing training workflows and delivery processes. Install and monitor computer application systems and hardware, producing reports. Prepare technical and user documentation, including LMS user guides and training materials, and conduct technical presentations. Maintain e-Learning and knowledge management platforms, specifically the Moodle Workplace-based LMS. Provide support for deployed training systems, manage versions, perform data recovery, and respond to user requests regarding course access, enrollment, and completion. Draft correspondence and prepare unit contributions for reports. Serve as a focal point for coordinating and monitoring training application systems development projects, processing administrative actions, and resolving implementation issues. Stay updated on technological developments, perform benchmarking, and propose new acquisitions. Provide guidance to junior staff and training focal points on LMS usage.
Work Experience
A minimum of seven years of experience in learning management systems administration, software development, technical writing, product management, or e-learning consulting is required. This is reduced to five years with a first-level university degree. Experience supporting Moodle Workplace-based LMS, designing Training Needs Assessment surveys, and with Microsoft SharePoint, Power Automate, Power Apps, and Power BI is desirable. Experience in information systems analysis and programming is also desirable.
