Legal Advisor (Data Protection)

Organizational Context

The Independent Institution on Missing Persons in the Syrian Arab Republic (IIMP) within the UN Secretariat seeks to strengthen institutional awareness and capacity in data protection and information governance. This consultancy role focuses on developing and delivering targeted training and supporting materials to achieve these objectives.

Job Purpose

The purpose of this consultancy is to enhance the IIMP's institutional capacity and staff awareness regarding data protection and information governance. The role involves developing a comprehensive training package, including policies, procedures, and practical guidance, and delivering tailored training sessions. The consultant will ensure staff understand their privacy obligations, how to handle sensitive information securely, and the importance of data impact assessments. The ultimate goal is to foster a strong data protection culture and ensure compliance with relevant frameworks, contributing to the secure and ethical handling of information within the institution.

Responsibilities

The consultant will finalize and update training materials on the IIMP Data Protection Policy and Standard Operating Procedures. This includes developing practical tools such as presentations, case studies, exercises, and guidance notes. The role involves designing and delivering tailored training sessions for IIMP personnel covering data protection principles, privacy obligations, information governance, and the secure handling of sensitive information. The consultant will also provide practical guidance on implementing data protection policies, conducting data impact assessments, and facilitating discussions to address staff queries. Finally, the consultant will prepare a comprehensive report detailing activities, observations, and recommendations for ongoing awareness and capacity-building.

Work Experience

A minimum of five years of progressive experience in data protection, privacy, information governance, or legal advisory services is required. Experience in developing and delivering training programs on these topics is also required. Experience in international organizations or humanitarian settings is desirable.
