Organizational Context
The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) Regional Office for Southeast Asia and the Pacific (ROSEAP) in Bangkok seeks a Cybercrime Law and Technology Specialist Intern. This UNPAID internship, lasting six months, focuses on strengthening criminal justice responses to cybercrime and supporting legal and regulatory frameworks.
Job Purpose
This internship aims to support UNODC's efforts in enhancing criminal justice responses to cybercrime and cybersecurity law within Southeast Asia and the Pacific. The intern will contribute to research, policy development, and program activities by analyzing legal frameworks, monitoring legislative developments, and assisting in drafting various documents. The role provides practical experience in international cybercrime law and policy, contributing to the UNODC's mandate of promoting justice and security in the digital age. The intern will gain exposure to comparative legal research, digital evidence concepts, and capacity-building initiatives, supporting the overall mission of the Cybercrime Programme.
Responsibilities
Conduct desk research and data collection on cyber-enabled and cyber-dependent crimes, including comparative legal analysis of national, regional, and international cybercrime and cybersecurity frameworks. Support the analysis of cyber threats, malware, online criminal misuse of technology, and emerging trends, while monitoring and summarizing relevant policy and legislative developments. Review laws and policies related to cybercrime, covering electronic evidence, procedural powers, jurisdiction, data protection, privacy, and international cooperation. Assist in drafting and reviewing technical notes, legal analyses, briefing notes, background papers, concept notes, reports, and presentations. Support work related to digital evidence, basic forensic concepts, and incident response. Assist in organizing meetings, workshops, technical capacity-building activities, and consultations. Provide general analytical, research, and administrative support to the Cybercrime Programme and related teams.
Work Experience
Professional work experience is not required for this internship. However, a field of study closely related to cybercrime law and policy is necessary. Applicants should demonstrate an ability to conduct comparative legal research, review legislation, summarize policy developments, and draft legal or policy briefing notes.
Skills
Computer literacy in standard software applications. Demonstrated interest in the UN's work and commitment to its ideals. Ability to interact effectively with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds. Strong drafting skills in English. Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel). Sound organizational skills, attention to detail, and discretion.
