The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) is the UN agency for urbanization and human settlements. It promotes sustainable and resilient cities and towns, ensuring adequate housing, infrastructure, and access to basic services. The Urban Lab supports countries in developing urban planning methods to address urbanization challenges and expansion.
Job Purpose
The Senior Urban Planner will provide essential planning and design outputs to support UN-Habitat's technical assistance in Mali. This role involves close collaboration with the Urban Lab team, regional offices, and country offices, reporting to the Programme Management Officer. The purpose is to contribute to the development and implementation of urban planning strategies and systems tailored to Mali's specific urbanization challenges, fostering well-planned and resilient urban environments. The position requires the creation of planning materials and participation in technical missions to facilitate effective urban development.
Responsibilities
The Senior Urban Planner is responsible for preparing comprehensive planning and design materials, including presentations, maps, and drawings, for workshops engaging city and county officials and technical staff in Mali. This includes the drafting, revision, and finalization of all planning documents, such as spatial analyses, drawings, and reports, specifically for Mali. The role also entails participating in necessary technical missions to support project objectives. Collaboration with the Urban Lab team, Regional Office for Africa West HUB, and Mali Country Office is crucial for effective coordination and reporting to the Programme Management Officer.
Work Experience
A minimum of five years of progressive professional experience in urban planning, territorial development, strategic planning, or related fields is required. Demonstrated experience in developing urban strategies, spatial plans, and territorial assessments, coupled with expertise in participatory planning and stakeholder engagement, is essential. Experience working with local governments, national institutions, and international organizations is also necessary.
